Our Professional Gutter Services in Atco, GA
Gutters carry roof water away from your walls and foundation. When they clog, water spills over the edge. Delaware's natural resources agency, DNREC, warns that this water can pool in front of doors or along the foundation and may enter the home.
How our gutter cleaning and downspout flushing works
On each visit we remove the debris, bag it, and rinse the gutter. Then we flush the downspouts. InterNACHI, the home inspectors' association, advises flushing gutters and downspouts with a hose and sending the water away from the house. We also check gutter slope (about 1/4 inch every 5 to 10 feet) so water never stands.
Signs your gutters need attention
- Water spills over the edge during rain.
- Water pools by a door or along the foundation.
- Water runs down the outside wall.
The first two come from DNREC. The third comes from GuideOne, an insurer.
Gutter guard cleaning in Atco, GA
Even with gutter guards installed, regular maintenance is essential for homes in Atco surrounded by mature oaks and pines. Gutter guards catch large leaves, but fine debris and pollen still accumulate over time.
Do gutter guards stop the need for cleaning?
No. Today's Homeowner reports that no gutter protection system can fully remove the need for cleaning, because all of them slowly collect small bits of debris. In a 2025 This Old House survey, 41 percent of homeowners with guards still cleaned once a year, and 22 percent still cleaned twice a year.
Fine debris like pollen (22 percent) and shingle grit (15 percent) still passes through. We lift or open the guard, clear the gutter underneath, brush the mesh top, rinse, and set it back. Call (678) 750-4006 for a guard cleaning estimate. Want new guards instead? See our gutter guard installation page.
Downspout cleaning in Atco, GA
A clean gutter still floods if the downspout is blocked. GuideOne warns that missing or damaged downspouts let water run down exterior walls. InterNACHI adds that a big storm can soak the soil, and water can move through the foundation into the house.
Does gutter cleaning include downspouts?
It should. We clear each downspout and flush it until water runs free. Heavy clogs can cost extra. HomeGuide lists $60 to $150 for flushing badly clogged downspouts.
Where should downspouts send the water?
InterNACHI says 4 to 6 feet from the foundation. GuideOne advises an extension of at least 6 feet. We check each outlet and tell you if water lands too close to the house.

What clogs gutters in Atco?
The National Park Service describes Atco's mill village as tree lined, with mature trees, and says the mill planted oaks along the streets. GuideOne says homes near tall trees need cleaning more often.
Needles are common too. UGA says most pines drop needles in the fall. Loblolly pine, with needles 4 to 6 inches long, grows across Georgia except the far northeast corner.
How often should gutters be cleaned in Georgia?
When is the best time of year to clean gutters?
DNREC says twice a year, in spring and early fall, and any time gutters clog. GuideOne says at least twice, and more with tall trees. In Atco, that means these visits:
| When | Why |
|---|---|
| Spring, after the pollen peak | Pollen peaks at the end of March and start of April |
| Early fall | Pines drop needles in the fall |
| Any time gutters clog | Water spills over the edge |
Rain adds up. NOAA normals for Cartersville Airport show about 48 inches a year. March (4.72 inches) and February (4.69 inches) are the wettest months. The National Weather Service says measurable rain falls on about 120 days a year across north Georgia.
What neglect does to older Atco homes
GuideOne says overflowing gutters let water seep into the soil beside a building. That can harm the foundation and flood indoor space. The National Park Service says most Atco mill houses are one story and wood framed, on brick or concrete foundations. Keeping water moving away from those walls matters.
DIY or hire a pro?
Should I clean my gutters myself?
You can. DNREC says a homeowner or a hired company can clear gutters. The risk is the ladder. In 2011, CDC counted 113 deaths and about 34,000 emergency room visits from work related ladder falls. Those counts are for workers. CDC says these injuries can be severe but are preventable.
Can gutters be cleaned in the rain?
Avoid storms and high winds. A University of Kentucky safety handout says to avoid ladders in high winds or storms.
How to choose a gutter cleaner in Atco
Georgia's State Licensing Board tells consumers to ask for proof of general liability insurance, and the name on the policy should match the business. The Better Business Bureau suggests getting at least three bids on the same job and a written contract. It notes the lowest bid may not be the best.
Before you book, ask these questions:
- Can I see proof of insurance?
- Is the price flat, by the foot, or by the hour?
- Does the price include downspouts and guards?
- Will I get a written contract?
About Atco: history and streets
Atco sits on the northwest side of Cartersville, inside city limits. The American Textile Company built the mill and village in 1904, and Goodyear bought them in 1929. Street names such as Goodyear, Wingfoot, Defender, Akron, and Ohio come from the Goodyear Company and its products, says the National Park Service. The mill closed in 2003, and much of the plant came down in 2009 and 2010.
The National Park Service says the village had 40 houses by 1905 and 110 by 1917. Goodyear added 89 more in 1929. Many Atco homes are close to a century old or older.
The Atco Baptist Church sanctuary dates to 1920. The old mill baseball field was still a community ball park when the district was listed in 2005. Pettit Creek runs east of Atco and Nancy Creek runs west.
